Today my driving instructor told me that he's going to miss me when I pass my test. This may or may not have been just after I pulled out of a junction while making "brmm brmm" noises. (He normally makes Roadrunner noises back. I like my instructor. :D)

ANYWAY. Following on from this post, I have decided to make a list of Commonly Confused Words I find strewn about many of the fics I read. And since I only have a certain level of tolerance for less-than-perfect spelling and grammar, I hit Alt+F+C pretty damn fast on anything that has a grammatical error within the first three paragraphs. Which means that these mistakes come from fics where my Bad Grammar Alarm hasn't blared a warning within five minutes of starting the fic, which means these mistakes are made by people with a decent level of English.

I'm not talking about typos. Everyone makes typos. I'm talking about consistent, inexcusable errors.

I will update this post as and when I come across more errors. In my experience, they tend to come in batches.

  • "Either" and "neither" do not mean the same thing.
  • Nor do "gate" and "gait".
  • Don't get me started on "break" and "brake".
  • Why can people never seem to get "worse" and "worst" straight?
  • "Lightning" versus "lightening". Lightening is a verb, people.
  • Please, please, learn the difference between "site" and "sight".
  • ..."Marquis" and "marquee". WTF, why did anyone even confuse those two in the first place.
